Beginning Again...

I once discovered that there are things about myself; ideas I hold about myself that I'd been lugging around with me forever that really have nothing to do with me now. And, really, maybe they never had anything to do with me.

Years back, my friend Jennifer (who is way awesome and living a life she loves) mentioned that since she'd met me, my self-confidence had grown. I think that perhaps this is because I had an awesome support system...people who were/are like, "good work!" "you can do it!" and actually believe I can. Not only that, but it is their belief that has helped me to believe, to realize that (as the saying goes) perhaps I was more afraid of what I could do that what I could not do.

So, I am taking my very first drawing class this semester, which begins tomorrow...I'm really nervous. But, as I have wonderful people supporting me and not to sound too corny) I believe in myself; I'm sure it'll be fine, and I will try to post some of my works here, as I have done before. I'm jumping in again, and this time I'm much more confident about how I will land. I know that I am my own safety net.

Sewing Machine (Art):

Well, last week I got my final project for last semster's art class back. I realized I hadn't posted it here, so this is it:
Basically it's a sort of assemblage piece...I painted the sewing machine, cut it out, poked some holes in it, threaded it with metallic gold thread and added an actual sewing machine needle (which is difficult to see) and even made my own little spool of golden thread. I then pasted that on top of brown "wood" paper, lovely fabric (most of which I originally used to make a skirt to wear on New Year's Eve 2006). The fabric is partially sewn and overhangs the mat, it also only covers part of the background, as part of it I hand-painted (I was so happy to find paint that matched soooo well!) You can see that in this photo:

I can't believe that class is over, and on Monday I begin my first ever drawing class. (Yikes!) I learned so much--about art and myself. And, gained so much confidence in my self and what I can do. I think I really surrendered to the Universe when I began this class...I took a scary leap and landed. I guess it's true, "you never know until you try..." (So cheesy).

not sure what happened....

I'm in that weird school-break void, I've been working and trying to work ahead so when the semester starts (and I begin my first Drawing class) I won't be as busy, or as stressed...
with that said, there should be some more/better posts soon!

PinkBird's Picture: Essaouira, Morocco

Last June we visited the fortified city of Essaouira, on Morocco's Atlantic coast to attend the annual Gnaoua Music Festival. I captured this photo on the way to dinner one evening just as dusk was falling over the beautiful, eclectic city. As we walked past this citadel near Essaouira's harbor I could not help but stop to watch all the seagulls circling above. After spending the few days prior to this in the desert, just standing here on the ramparts near the ocean observing these sea birds was welcome serenity. Essaouira is a fairly bustling city so this was also a pleasantly peaceful moment. Once I took this picture we continued our stroll toward the restaurant witnessing a magnificent sun set over the Atlantic Ocean.

Travel Map

First, have you been to Peru? I've been in the mood to wander and South America (specially Peru) sounds exciting and beautiful, any tips? Or, we're also thinking perhaps a relaxing beachy/island journey, suggestions?

Also, For those who like to travel:

(P.S. Seeing this map really puts my own travels into perspective. It makes me all warm and fuzzy that I have been fortunate enough to get to travel to and live in so many places, but also makes me just a hint sad that there are so many more places I'd like to travel to).

I have also just put all kinds of Creations on sale, which you can see HERE.

In other news, I have been quite sick the last few days, the doctor gave me some antibiotics, but basically I think I have a really bad cold. Yuk....so, back to recuperating...create a great day!

PinkBird Creations FAQs:

For the New Year...I might as well repost the PinkBird Creations FAQ's, just in case:

Why do you only take PayPal?
PayPal is the most secure form of online payments for both you and us. Millions and millions of people worldwide use it and it's very secure. They take all major credit cards and e-checks as well. It's the easiest way for everyone involved.

How do I know my information is secure?
PayPal guarantees that your payment information is secure. All of your personal information on PinkBird is secured by a shared SSL certificate provided by our webhosting company.

What are your shipping costs/times?
Take a look at our shipping page for details.

This vintage bottle cap is a bit scuffed, what's up with that?
Please keep in mind, many of the materials I use are vintage and therefore may have slight scuffs or wear. Keep this in mind when ordering. Most of the time I will not use something that is just too old and worn.

These gems look different in person than they did on your site. Why?
This is totally natural, and adds to the uniqueness of each piece. These stones are of varying grades and come in different shades, shapes, and textures. This is natural.

So, you like it like that?
I do like the look of things that are a bit worn or "lived in." "Wabi-Sabi" is one of my guiding principles. It's a Japanese term for a kind of beauty that is imperfect, transitory, and incomplete. It is about beauty that is hidden, subtle, and almost invisible at first glance. They are small wonders, and magic spells that open up the secret joys concealed in the passing moments of everyday routine.

What's up with you using recycled game pieces and bottle caps?

I enjoy creating jewelry with the lovely little things in everyday life that we usually tend to pass up or toss aside. As I've said before, it's about beauty that is understated and almost invisible at first glance; we see some things so often that we begin to not see them anymore and they become just another part of our landscape. They are small wonders, which can open the secret joys hidden in our everyday lives.

When I use these "found" objects in my creations they are always recycled objects like game pieces or bottle caps. These game pieces and bottle caps are recycled--not reproduced. The brand names used here are trademarked and owned by those brands. No affiliation or endorsement by the brands/trademark owners is made, implied or expressed and we acquired these objects from unconnected sources.
Also, as stated before, the bottle caps, vintage new stock or used, may have slight scuffs, marks, dents or even a little rust on them. If I feel an object is too old or worn I will not use it in a piece.

Do I have to give you my real email address?
When ordering or inquiring about an order, please provide a valid email address. This address is used only for order confirmation, shipping confirmation, and to contact you in case there is a problem with your order. Simply put, we will need to contact you, and if we can't do that your order may be cancelled. Also, Please keep all email receipts and order numbers until you recieve your order. If you don't get an email confirmation of your order, your order may not have been processed.

I really wanted that necklace (or bracelet, or earrings, or...whatever), and it's sold out. Do you have more?
All items at PinkBird Creations are one of a kind, or of a limited amount, therefore they are on a "first come, first serve" basis. If you happen to order the same item that has already been ordered by someone else, before it is marked sold, your payment will be refunded. Sometimes, if an item is sold out, I may be making more. If it is something you just cannot live without (or just something you really, really want) just email us and ask if I have more in the works. This is not always possible, as some of my materials are vintage or hard-to-find.

I've had this bracelet for awhile and it broke. Can you fix it?
I can't fix everything. So, please, be gentle with your jewelry.

I want PinkBird Updates and News from the Nest, do you have a Mailing List?
Please join PinkBird's mailing list to be notified of store updates, events, specials, and happenings in the "handmade revolution." Members of our mailing list will be offered periodic promotions and coupons for our shop. We will try to keep the newletters to a minimum, as we would never want to clog up your inbox. Your email address will never be sold or given away.

Why can't I order from you?
We at PinkBird Creations reserve the right to refuse service for reasons including, but not limited to: non-payment of past orders, failure to reply to emails, or providing false information on orders.

Do you sell Wholesale?
We currently do not sell wholesale.

Do you do custom work?
This really depends. But, please, email me at Bekki @ pinkbird.net and ask. If you have gemstones, bottle caps, etc. that you'd really like worked into a piece, I'd love to do it, but I do get busy so I might not be able to.

I love that darn cute PinkBird, can I use your logo on a shirt, hat, bag, I'm making?
All text and images on PinkBird.net are property of Bekki Harris, copyright 2005. If you want to borrow them, please, just ask. I'm good at sharing.

Using PinkBird images, logos, etc. on products for resale without permission is prohibited.

Why isn't my question listed here?
Send it in and it might be soon!

Last night I dreamed of India. It was colorful and dusty. I won some kind of skateboarding race. And I made a friend.

Dreams are amazing and confusing and beautiful. My night dreams have melded with my day dreams. As India has been on my mind lately. Skateboarding, however, has not.

I told my artist friend, Sylvie about it...her wonderful advice was to draw my dreams. Dreams are unique, and thus drawing them will produce unique art. I would like to draw India, to create it. But, perhaps my dreams are telling me to live it, to be it.

PinkBird's Picture: Haleakala, Maui

I never thought I would be able to stand above the clouds and still have my feet on the ground. I guess that's why they say“nothing is impossible.” Here I am near the top of Maui's“House of the Sun” or Haleakala more than 10,000 feet high. The top of this giant volcanic crater offers beautiful and almost unbelievable views, it's even hard to imagine you are still in Hawaii as it can get quite cold up there and the terrain appears almost alien. Being at the top of Haleakala can be a life altering experience, you feel so small yet so grand all at once. Haleakala is one of my favorite places to be in the whole world, it's so full of aloha--just peaceful and absolutely amazing--it is definitely the“peak” experience of any journey to Maui.

Happy New Year!

Hello 2008. Wow. I still can't believe 2007 is over, it just flew by. What an amazing year it was. I made art. I laughed. I cried. I danced.
We did a lot of traveling this year (and I wish it could have been more, but won't be greedy). So many wonderful experiences and people have come our way.
So, Thank you. Such a simple phrase, but it pretty much sums it all up.
Wishing you a wonderful New Year,
